Put Texas' famous summer heat to good use. Learn to dye any protein fiber (animal fibers, silk, soy silk, latte) using food colors and vinegar, using solar heat and time to set the dye. This process can be used for either roving or already spun yarns. We will cover how to make a solid color, an easy way to make shaded yarn or roving, a way to produce two colors, how to hurry the process up, and how to wash the yarn or roving afterwards. There will be samples of roving and yarn already dyed by these methods to play with during the class, as well. These same techniques can be used for commercial dyes or natural dyes at home on your own.
Prerequisites: None. Children 10 or older are permitted to attend this class, but it is primarily for adults.
Materials fee includes: Food Color Dye, vinegar, jars which the student will take home, samples of roving and yarn for the student to dye. Handout.
Students should bring: Old clothes or smocks in case of spills and stains. A box and some cloth for securing and padding the jars on the way home. Students may also bring some roving or yarn of their own to dye.
Class size: Minimum 4, Maximum 12.
